InstaGrabber

Published on in 🔗 Links

Although I no longer use Instagram, I still have an account there, and from time to time I like to see what people I know post there. To do that I always used the website in the browser. However, their website is not fast and has some bugs. Recently, I came across the alternative Instagram client “InstaGrabber”. While it sounds like a simple Instagram image downloader, it has a lot more functionality. It allows viewing your feed and stories of people you follow. To enable this, you can also login.

While I develop my new custom CMS, it seems like I neglect the blogging. So here’s a photo from my evening walk. Going for a walk after work helps me to breathe fresh air and get a clear mind. It’s also great to enjoy the last few days of summer.

Carl MH Barenbrug writes about the carbon impact of web designs. He reminds to consider that fast loading and less energy use is more important than fancy designs.

I watched “The Social Dilemma” on Netflix today. I like the movie! A good movie with a lot of things people from within my bubble probably already know. And a lot of reasons to stay away from (classic) social media.

Just another case of unfair competition

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

With Apple launching Fitness+, they launched just another service with an anti-competitive advantage. While they take almost 100% of what’s left after taxes etc., other services are forced to use In-App-Purchases of which Apple takes 30%. I don’t understand how some people defend Apple for this and think this behavior benefits them. Actually, it only leads to a decrease in the quality of non-Apple services, because they somehow have to try to compete with Apple, but get 30% less of the revenues. But in the end I don’t really care, I don’t buy any of Apple’s overpriced products with false privacy promises and platform lock-in anyway.

Microsoft’s underwater data centre resurfaces after two years

Published on in 🔗 Links

Underwater data centers powered by 100% renewable energy are a very interesting idea. It is also noteworthy that they seem to be much more reliable than conventional DCs and that an “unreliable grid” isn’t such a big problem.

Thinking about WordPress

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

Today I have dealt with WordPress for the first time in a long time. I’m not planning to move my blog to WordPress (I’m in the process of developing my own content management system), but have set up a site for someone else and migrated a few articles.

I’m switching from Backblaze B2 to Scaleway’s Object Storage.

I used to use B2 as a backup destination for my restic backups from various servers. The service is fine, but what drives me away is missing €-billing (and credit cards as the only payment method) and a somewhat slow performance (at least it feels like that). Scaleway asks for twice the price (0,01€ per GB per month) but the first 75GB are free. And my last monthly B2 bill was below 1$ anyway, so it doesn’t really matter. ☺️ Now backing up my 51GB home cloud: 4,5 hours left.
