⚠️ This entry is already over one year old. It may no longer be up to date. Opinions may have changed.

After quickly trying out Outdooractive, I think I found an alternative that fits my needs a bit better and is also more inline with my values: OsmAnd.

I tried it a few years ago, but was overwhelmed by the number of functionalities and settings. Today, I downloaded the app again and the UI is still not as clean as Komoot, but after taking some time to configure it, I think it’s the open-source alternative to Komoot, I am looking for. The number of functionalities and the customizability could even be an advantage.

You can configure multiple profiles (like for cycling, walking, hiking etc.) with custom settings. It also includes an extension for tracking. And, as it’s based on OpenStreetMap, includes a lot of data. For example, I discovered that it shows national bike routes and also gives the option to navigate them.

It also includes route-planing capabilities, but I still have to test them.

In case they are not enough, I might also give bikemap a try to create GPX files and import them to OsmAnd. To visualize and save routes, I will try to either use my private GoBlog instance or another open-source tool called wanderer.

Let’s see when I have time to give it a proper trial outdoor.
