Today I went for a ride on my non-electric city bike. It’s fun to be pushed by an electric motor, but riding with your own power isn’t so bad either and it makes me feel good to push harder on the pedals sometimes. I’m also thinking about buying a road bike as a “reward” after my bachelor’s degree to do a bit more sport again, but one that you can ride on more than just the road. 🚴‍♂️🤔

This happened to me several times today. I listen to music on my smartphone while sitting at the PC. I want to skip a track. But what do I do? I press the “Next” key on my PC keyboard instead of taking my phone and pressing “Next” there. 🤦‍♂️

Still the same person, just with a lot less hair. This is probably also the first selfie on this blog.

Colin Walker writes:

It’s a little bittersweet — on the one hand it feels good as I know that I have a new solution but, on the other, it feels a little sad that the fruits of so much time and effort are now redundant.

I had exactly the same feeling when moving from my kind-of-microservice-architecture to my new GoBlog solution. But I think all the time and effort was still worth it, I learned a lot and had a lot of fun.

I have this on my to-do list for quite some time already: More documentation for my blogging software GoBlog. GoBlog is still changing from time to time and probably needs a bit of refactoring before creating a release. But a first step to offer more documentation is adding an example configuration, which I just did. I hope this helps all those curious people who wanted to try GoBlog. Feel free to contact me with questions!

I just took a quick look at my server logs. And I see that there are some bots that are constantly crawling my site. If that would be search engines, feed readers etc. that wouldn’t be a problem. But this are crawlers by companies whose websites try to sell me some tools to “make SEO easier” and “uncover the strong and weak points of my sites and their competitors”. They are crawling my site and make me pay for the server while they are building indices to sell for big money? I think that sucks.

Just a small comparison to show that many websites are completely obese: My bachelor thesis in PDF format (which I handed in yesterday) has a size of 1.4 MB. It contains several images and 85 pages of text. With a high information density, this is a much smaller size than most websites have. And it would have been probably also possible to compress or optimize the PDF further.

What I like about Deezer compared to Spotify: They don’t do those A/B tests where only a small group of users receives new features. They just release them for everyone. In other words, they just added an option to the Audiobooks app to adjust the playback speed. I can finally listen to audiobooks in 1.4x or 1.6x speed now.

Sometimes the problem with programming is that you can’t turn off your mind as easily as you can turn off your PC. Practically, you don’t program anymore. But the brain still continues to program.

This week is the final spurt for my bachelor thesis. I want to submit it on Thursday or Friday. Then there’s my presentation two or three weeks later. And when I pass that, I’m no longer a student. I’m excited, but it’s also a strange feeling after more than three and a half years of working towards this goal.
