I have deleted a domain for the first time
Today I deleted a domain for the first time.
Tech, life and everything else
Today I deleted a domain for the first time.
Did you know that there are official example domains that can be used in documentation? example.com, example.net and example.org are all example domains of the IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which are explicitly intended for use in documentation.1 In documentations or even in sample code I often stumbled over examples where no official sample domain was used, but one that can actually be registered. It is not recommended to use such a domain, because you can’t make sure that it will be registered once and maybe unintentionally data will end up with strangers.
I know, Cloudflare is often criticized in privacy groups and also I do not find everything good. I myself use Cloudflare actually only for two things, which do not concern the privacy of the visitors of my websites. DNS hosting and domain registration.
British domain registry Nominet created a world map of country-code top-level domains. It’s really interesting to see that .tk (Tokelau) is is the world’s largest ccTLD, because registration is free and no expired domains get deleted. After that comes .cn (China) and .de (Germany).
What I like about Go: It’s quick and easy to create small programs, including support for Docker and everything. For example, today I developed a minimal URL shortener that stores the entries in a SQLite database: https://jlel.se/goshort
Now I have finally found a good use for the domain I recently registered. 😄
In this post I want to show with which services and tools it is possible to run a completely free website. An own website not only offers the possibility to create your own professional web presence, it can also make you independent from silos like Facebook, Twitter or Medium. It is always better to publish content on your own page with your own domain. If a service changes the terms of use or ceases operation, it is so much easier to move to another service.
Do you know how difficult it is to tell someone your email address with your custom domain name?
I already wrote about that you should think about paying for your email service (or host it yourself if you’re crazy), but another important aspect is the email address itself.
