Is it a bad buy?

Some weeks ago, I wrote about my first experiences with Proxmox, which I had been playing with to make use of an old, small-size desktop PC. I also considered virtualizing my home router. A few weeks later, a small “firewall appliance” (just a mini PC with an Intel N150 CPU and four 2.5 GbE ports) from the brand Topton arrived, along with a used 16 GB DDR5 memory stick and a 1 TB NVMe, both of which I had ordered separately. This was the setup intended to run my virtualized router.

Trying Proxmox VE 9 and should I virtualize my router?

Published on in ✍️ Posts

I’d heard about Proxmox a few times in online forums and videos about “home labs.” I always wondered why people went through the trouble of a complex VM setup instead of just using Docker containers. While I still don’t fully understand the need for VMs everywhere, my curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to give it a try.

A small update to my post from yesterday:

I did one final (really, the last one!) optimization to my network (luckily without new hardware). Instead of letting the new ASUS router do all the networking and QoS, I repurposed one of my GL.iNet Beryl AX routers with vanilla OpenWRT as the main router, doing SQM, DHCP, DNS proxying, and all the other stuff. Now the ASUS is running in Access Point Mode, handling just the mesh WiFi and partly acting as a LAN switch (because the Beryl AX has just one WAN and one LAN port). My bufferbloat is much better (or non-existent), and the Cloudflare Speedtest is showing me “Great” in all categories, even when connected with WiFi to the repeater.

I think I will stay without cake-autorate, but try to tweak the optimal SQM bandwidth limits a bit over the following days.

My improved 5G setup

Published on in ✍️ Posts

Last year, I documented my “perfect” 5G setup. Yesterday, that Quectel modem was sold. So, what prompted the change, and how am I online now?

I was using my 5G router setup with Vanilla OpenWRT and QMI Cellular as a protocol for quite some time, but there were irregular disconnections etc. Updating the firmware of the modem didn’t help. Some days ago, I noticed that it’s also possible to configure with Modem Manager (which provides connection information directly in LuCI) and put the Quectel modem into MBIM mode. It’s running without hiccups now! Also updated to OpenWRT 24.10.

It still works!

Two years ago, when my girlfriend and I moved together, I rented a VDSL router, a FRITZ!Box 7590 AX. In my second flat, I still had a FRITZ!Box 7490. But one and a half years later, I replaced the wired Internet connection in the second flat with a cellular based one, and the 7490 had no use anymore.

Update Tailscale on the GL.iNet Beryl AX (GL-MT3000)

I’ve been toying with my recently received GL.iNet Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) for some days and I have to say, it’s wonderful! It provides all the features I need in combination with my 5G router (like support for IPv6). I was also able to set up a VPN connection using Wireguard to the other home that will keep a wire-based internet connection with a public (but changing) IPv4 address. As it also works perfectly fine with an LTE stick or mobile tethering, I’m quite tempted to buy a second one for travel purposes.

5G chaos in my head

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

One of the reasons I like blogging is that it sometimes helps me organize my thoughts. There’s a lot of chaos in my head before I write them down, and after, my head is sometimes calm.
