Tech, life and everything else

💭 Thoughts: 2019

Welcome to the Thoughts section of my blog. Thoughts are better kept on my blog than on Twitter or other online platforms.

Listen to long blog articles using Pocket

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

Yesterday I found a nice article with the title “Into the Personal-Website-Verse” (I really recommend to read it - or listen to it) but which is quite long. My reading speed isn’t that fast and it was late and I was tired but wanted to know the content of this blog article.

IFTTT alternative: Beehive

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

I recently wrote a blog about how to schedule posts on Netlify using IFTTT. IFTTT is a proprietary service from a company that somehow has to make money (They earn money by charging other services that want to make their service available to the IFTTT platform).

I’m now using my own mail server

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

The last times I wrote about email topics, I already had the thought in my mind to try setting up my own mail server again. I already tried this a while back, but switching from FastMail (my favorite mail provider) was too scary for me because I wasn’t quite confident about the setup.

kis3: Why I’m writing my own website statistics tool

When you host your static website on a service like Netlify, it’s not that easy to get statistics of your website visitors without violating their privacy by using tools like Google Analytics. Because it’s a static website you can’t use some statistics plugins the way you can in WordPress and it’s also not possible to view which pages the server is serving, because Netlify doesn’t give you access to it’s logs.

I just found this article from Gizmodo about RSS while going through the list of new items in my feed reader (Miniflux) because it was on the front page of Hacker News, to which I subscribed using RSS. The article says that RSS is a better alternative to consuming news through social media (especially Twitter).

Own your email domain

I already wrote about that you should think about paying for your email service (or host it yourself if you’re crazy), but another important aspect is the email address itself.

Pay for your emails

Yesterday, I wrote about Delta Chat and Chat over IMAP. To be able to chat using email, you need an account at an email provider.

Email based Messaging (Delta Chat and COI)

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

There are tons of messengers out their, but they all share the same problem. They are all isolated from each other, so if you want to contact someone via this messenger, the other person has to use this same messenger too. This leads to everyone using the same shitty messenger (in my region this is WhatsApp), although there are many better alternatives.

Merging my blogs

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

I recently realized my writings are cluttered all over multiple websites. I think that isn’t good and isn’t helping to motivate me to write more often. Instead of publishing something on my blog, I often just write a short tweet. To change this, I decided to merge my blogs, or at least some of them.
