It still works!

⚠️ This entry is already over one year old. It may no longer be up to date. Opinions may have changed.

Two years ago, when my girlfriend and I moved together, I rented a VDSL router, a FRITZ!Box 7590 AX. In my second flat, I still had a FRITZ!Box 7490. But one and a half years later, I replaced the wired Internet connection in the second flat with a cellular based one, and the 7490 had no use anymore.

Now the rent for the 7590 AX expired, I sent it back and replaced it with the 7490. And it still works! Sure, it has no Wi-Fi 6 and is a bit slower, but it’s still fast enough to make use of the maximum speed that reaches our flat (100 Mbps). My dad bought it more than 10 years ago, and it’s still running fine, only since recently it isn’t getting any feature updates anymore, but will probably get security updates, as it’s a very popular router in Germany.

When we move again next year (and also merge both households), I will check if the cellular connection is fast enough in the new flat, or if we will still make use of this ancient tech for some more time. ☺️
