⚠️ This entry is already over one year old. It may no longer be up to date. Opinions may have changed.

I’ve taken another look at my export script for Komoot (original post), now that Bending Spoons has acquired Komoot. I’ve extended the script to also download cover images and, if available, an image of the map – I found that in the API responses.

Bending Spoons doesn’t have the best track record after acquiring other companies (like Evernote or an app called Filmic Pro), so I’m expecting Komoot to get worse in the near future. That’s why I’ve decided to save my data. At least reverse engineering the API for the additional things to export wasn’t that complicated.

I’m now wondering if there are any good alternatives to Komoot, preferably European and/or open source. I mainly use it for hiking and bike trips, and I really like the sport-specific maps and routing algorithms. Do you know of any alternatives that offer similar features?

And why on earth are they doing this right now, when I’m already in the process of switching apps and services to reduce my USA dependency?
