I recently wrote about my internet problems. While O2-DE has finally fixed it and also confirmed they found and fixed something (after it was already working), I also decided to give in and spend another 30 euros per month on fiber to the home.

Last Thursday a technician was here to drill through the wall into the stairwell and do the cabling. After he went away, a neighbor told me her internet isn’t working anymore. 🫠 On Friday was the supposed activation day, and surprise, the fiber connection wasn’t working as well.

So I called the hotline, and they sent another technician, who came today and fixed the cables. It seems a fiber-optic cable had been kinked in the basement, causing the fibers to break.

But now it’s finally working, and I reconfigured the router to now use the fiber WAN. The download speed isn’t much different from before. Upload speed is much faster. But the best improvement is the latency. With SQM enabled and set to the contract speeds, I have no bufferbloat!

If I’m bored again, I might look into enabling some kind of failover with the 5G modem, but mwan3 isn’t working that well with OpenWRT 25.12, as it’s still based on iptables. mwan4 is too new and not in the official repository yet. In case there’s an outage, I can just plug the 5G modem in, the fiber modem out, click a couple of buttons in LuCI and be online again. Keep it simple and stupid.
