Tech, life and everything else

💭 Thoughts

Welcome to the Thoughts section of my blog. Thoughts are better kept on my blog than on Twitter or other online platforms.

Back to study

Tomorrow is the first day of the new semester with two lectures, one in the forenoon, one in the evening. I am really very curious how this semester will be and if everything will work out as I have planned.

How to read paywalled Medium articles without a membership

Published on in 💭 Thoughts
Updated on

I sometimes publish links to Medium articles. Often the articles are behind the Medium paywall. This gets the author a few bucks per month, paid by “Medium members”. I’m still a Medium member until March (I paid for one whole year), but I won’t extend my membership after that, mainly because I don’t get enough value out of the subscription (many articles are clickbait or do not interest me). But in itself I think it’s good that authors are paid directly by readers’ money and not by tracking readers.

It feels great without Twitter

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

I left Twitter one month ago and didn’t miss it a single time. Reading stories about “Brand Blockers” (Medium paywall) just gives me the feeling that this was the right decision.

Human communication

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

Is it good or bad that human communication is so ambiguous? Human communication is complicated. How about if human communication works via a well-defined interface (like a programming interface) and the communication recipient always understands messages exactly as the communication sender intended? From my naive point of view and as someone who prefers unambiguity, I would say that this could solve a lot of problems, or prevent them from happening at all.

Opinions can change over time. And since I often post opinions on my blog, I’ve added a feature to my blog theme that displays a warning message above posts that are over one year old (example).

I already have enough devices

One problem that can occur when you are in a technology-focused bubble is that you often feel the desire to buy new hardware, even though you already have everything you need.

My favorite Telegram features

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

I think I’m in some kind of bubble, but most of the people I instant message with use Telegram, because either they are computer science students too or because I convinced (or persuaded) them.

The security risk of embedding images from external sites

Published on in 💭 Thoughts
Updated on

On a lot of IndieWeb sites, I noticed that profile images of webmentions get directly embedded from their original source. For example, Twitter profile images are loaded directly from Twitter servers (pbs.twimg.com) or even my profile image is directly embedded from my site.

Optimizing software

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

After talking to @jlelse, I finally decided not to trouble myself with writing my own static website generator and just improve what I have right now.

More important

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

There are things that are more important to me than computers and the Internet: Like spending time with the love of my life.
